Helping Youth Confront Substance Use
Team Fourteen serves adolescents and their families in Essex County who are dealing with substance use concerns. We are a specialized initiative of Beth Israel Lahey Health Behavioral Services made up of clinicians dedicated to creating positive change in the communities we serve. We help young people:- Discover new habits and interests that lessen their dependence on drugs and alcohol
- Improve relationships with family and friends
- Reduce their substance use
Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA)
Team Fourteen provides a family-centered, evidence-based approach to treatment that uses the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA) to help young people and their caregivers and guardians confront substance use. The A-CRA model focuses on positive reinforcement to meet a specified treatment goal, such as reduced drug use. The model recognizes that people who use drugs and alcohol get something out of it, or they wouldn’t keep doing it. The goal of A-CRA is to help young people reconnect with or discover new sources of positive reinforcement within their community to help decrease their reliance on drugs or alcohol. Through the A-CRA model, Team Fourteen clinicians and staff help young people confront their substance use by:- Listening to and learning from young people about what is important to them
- Helping young people connect to activities that have meaning and value to them
- Identifying goals and how to achieve them
- Helping young people learn new skills, such as problem-solving and positive communication (with caregivers, friends and others)
Our Services
Individual and Family Counseling
We provide 14 goal-oriented sessions to help young people and their caregivers. Topics range from goal setting to communication skills to relapse prevention and more.
Reinforcers Group
Our Reinforcers Group combines the A-CRA model with adventure-based counseling to help participants 14- to 18-years old set goals, improve communication skills, understand triggers and prevent substance use relapse.
Adventure-based counseling works to build participants' self-esteem and decision making, communication skills and conflict resolution through experiential learning.
School and Community Presentations
If your school or community organization needs support in addressing or building awareness of adolescent substance use concerns, please contact us to discuss training and consultation options. Our collaborations include school health fairs, school assemblies, provider discussion groups, parent nights, alternatives to school suspensions and more.

Make a Referral
Referrals can be made by parents, caregivers, PCPs, therapists or other providers concerned about a young person’s substance use. To make a referral, call 978-867-7137.
